Viva Vigan! Binatbatan Festival!

     The Binatbatan Festival here in Vigan City was started in year 2002. This festival is connected to Vigan’s abel Iloco craft. It comes from the word batbat, a pair of bamboo stick used to separate cotton pods that come from a tall tree called kapas sanglay. Kapas sanglay tree bears fruits that dries up at the branches of the tree itself then just falls off after the fruit splits by itself exposing the seed-filled cottons inside. The playful movements of this dance were created for specifically for children and represent the actions of cotton farmers as they separate the seeds from the fibers using sticks. This is to showcase this traditional weaving craft that is said to predate the arrival of the Spaniards. Filipinos are indeed the world's most Christmas-oriented people. We start recognizing the Christmas season as early as September with radio stations playing Christmas songs on the first day of September. In every city or town in the Philippines, each has its own way to celebrate the season. In the World Heritage City of Vigan, its citizens gather as crowd to participate in the unveiling of the Christmas tree, a yearly tradition. Stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic, children can't go outside to play because they are afraid to get infected by the virus.  If you allow your children to play outside with friends, consider limiting it to just a few other kids and encouraging physical distancing. Make sure your children wash their hands before they come back inside. People have been urged to stay at home. Many of the children who struggle the hardest to learn effectively and thrive in school under normal circumstances are now finding it difficult.    When the educational institutions have remained closed, online education appears to be the only alternative to ensure the continuity of education of us students. But the question remains as to whether we were prepared to utilise these substitute means of providing education in our country without diluting the quality of education to be imparted. The existence of life on planet earth is possible only because of the suitable environment we live in.
